[TO: Minnesota Senator Norman Coleman]
THANK You! Senator, for the favour of your reports via my computer; they are informative, and I do enjoy reading them. As you will see on reading further, I do have an apparently-minor point of which to complain:
YOU, Sir, are a United States Senator.
Accordingly, referring to yourself publicly & whilst engaged in the public business as ‘Norm’ and otherwise fostering this dreadful, shammy & faux-democratic chumminess is simply not appropriate to the dignity of your office. I perceive, for the dignity of us all, that you should overtly and specifically lead the way, and in so many words and in all your public utterances & writng, toward the employment of a far-more formal style of address; and, this, both to constituents and the public-at-large.
The reasons are many; and, this perhaps is the most compelling:
FORMAL Bearing earns authority.
SOMEDAY, Somehow, on some point, the House and Senate are going to have to stand up to the Executive; and, on that day, I pray God that ‘Norm’ and ‘Amy’ and rag-tag & bob-tail will not be laughed at, spanked and sent back to their congressional Never-never-land. With many sincere regards, I am,
RESPECTFULLY & cet
